Can I paint over painted MDF?

My new home had built in wardrobes in a colour and style that we don't like. We cannot afford to remove and replace and think a different colour will help give them a more contemporary look. They look very glossy in colour. Can I repaint them and what sort of preparation am I looking at? Fine sanding (120) then primer then paint? Do I need MDF primer? If condition is very good do I still need a sealer to avoid paint moisture? oil based paint vs water based? Any ideas much appreciated! Wish I could post photos! Jenny

Hi jenny.
All you need to do is sand down using 80 grade paper.
No need for mdf primer. Use an oil based paint, first undercoat then finish with top coat of choice, I would not use water based paint on anything other than priming.

Always use an oil based paint where possible,
no need for a primer unless there is bare wood showing.
Use a p120 sandpaper not 80 as it will scratch the paint to much.
Use an undercoat, let dry then do a light sanding with p180 finishing paper for that expert look. then apply your top coat, i recommend johnstones eggshell.
If you do use eggshell no need for undercoat as it is self undercoating so it will save on costs, just do two eggshells.
