Can a ceiling light be installed in a room that only has wall lights?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.06 PM

Our new house has a room with 3 wall lights and no ceiling lights. No obvious ceiling light exit points either. How can we get ceiling lights fitted? What sort of work would be required? Thanks Jenny Additional info Thank you for your answers so far. The room appear to be an extension and has slipped roof over it.

The ceiling light needs to be wired from the room above of the loft (depending if it's ground or first floor), so the floor covering and floorboards would need to be lifted to exposed the void and a cable run to the centre of the room where you want the ceiling light. If the void above the ceiling can not be accessed then its a messy job trying to install a cable from the underside. A lot of holes will need to be made in the ceiling and the wall chased out so re-plastering will be required aswell as re-decoration.

It really depends upon what is above the ceiling. If it is an ordinary house you should be able to work between the floors or in the loft, and may even find existing circuits up there that have been made redundant by the previous owner. Any good electrician will give you free advice about this and may well be prepared to do some exploratory work for you, if not free then at a reasonable cost. Joe McNamara, Araman Electrical.
