Carpet stairs before fitting laminate at bottom of stairs?
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.32 PM
We are going to be getting a new stair carpet and new laminate flooring at the bottom of stairs. Should we fit carpet first or laminate the bottom level first?

Hello Louise. Fit the laminate first as the carpet will then cover the gap between the laminate and bottom step, which will create a nice neat finish. If you do the carpet first then a solution needs to be found to cover the gap, normally wooden edge beading which is not as neat as the first option. Regards, Phil

Hi
The carpet is fitted into the expansion gap of the wood floor round so I always fit the laminate first. This means that where you would normally put beading (scotia) around the outside of the room to cover the expansion gap, in the case of the bottom step of carpet the carpet is trucked into this gap. If you all ready have the carpet measure the pile depth and adjust the size of the gap if you have a 7mm pile carpet then a 5mm gap would be perfect. If you do it the other way round by fitting the wood up to the carpet, you won't be sure of the gap as you will in effect knock the wood down till you get a clean finished edge. Problem is if you push the wood too far you might end up leaving no gap at all and won't know that as the carpet is in the way. Hope that helps.
