Bathroom Fitting

Fitting a bath in my second floor en-suite - is floor strong enough for roll top bath?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.05 PM

Hi, I'm thinking of fitting a roll top bath (acrylic) in my 2nd floor en-suite. The room already holds a shower, sink, and toilet so plumbing shouldn't be an issue but I'm not sure if the floor is strong enough. The house is less than 5 years old and the 2nd floor is an original design of the house (not a loft extension). I've not ripped up the tile flooring yet to see what the joists, but the flooring is chipboard like the rest of the house. Also, if the joists run across the flow of the drain, how big a hole can I drill in the joists to carry waste water? Many thanks, Simon

Hi Simon, The best thing to make the floor stronger without a huge structural change is replacing the chipboard for a 25 mm marine plywood. Also you can take advantage doing this and check the piping underneath. I hope this will help you! Javier Tinte handymanfixinglondon

Hi, if your floor was designed as a bathroom and you want to fit a bath in it then fit a bath in it. An acrylic bath weighs far less than older style cast iron baths and the latter have been fitted into bathrooms with standard sized joists for easily over a hundred years. It's the water and the person that weighs a lot, not the bath. Regards, James

I say it would be absolutely fine and presume it's the same Strength as the main floor underneath 👍🏻
