Want upstairs toilet but no soil stack

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi, I want to put a toilet upstairs, but have no soil stack as my toilet downstairs. What's the procedure?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi pete All you need to do is install a new stack. Easy to do you just dig out and find the drainage under the ground and connect using the correct adapters, about 4 hour job if all goes well. Many thanks john

Pete, ideally it involves digging down to your underground waste pipe cutting a section out and fitting a T shaped soil pipe in the gap which is attached with rubberized couplings secured with large stainless jubilee clips. Fit a section of soil pipe to above ground level then backfill with a few inches of gravel above the horizontal pipe ensuring the exposed pipework is well supported, then top up with whatever you dug out. If it's under soil, then make sure you keep the top soil to one side so you can reinstate the garden to its original condition. If it's under concrete then you may need to hire a breaker to get down there. To cut the drain pipe underground, especially if it's clay, you will need to dig a pretty big hole as you may need to under cut with a Petrol engined stone saw. Cut or knock through behind the site of your proposed toilet upstairs and connect up all your pipework. Of course, if you are attached and your neighbour has an upstairs convenience, you could save yourself all the trouble by asking if you can tee into their waste pipe!! Regards, Andre

Andre from Thornfield Renovations is spot on with the work involved. You would be better using a manhole instead of a Tee though! Regards Graham
