Pitched roof to bridge / intersect bay window timber frame

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

I'm planning on creating a ground floor single storey extension with a pitched roof. The existing house tiles or Rosemary (heavy) so planning on using these on the new roof for continuity. The issue I have is there is a two storey bay window structure at the rear. Downstairs are uPVC French doors and upstairs a uPVC window which is sat on a timber frame that has external render. The upper wall plate for the pitched roof would need to extend across this timber bay structure and I'm wondering how this could be done. The extension would allow for removal of the door underneath to create an open plan space. I'd like the roof to be vaulted structure with Velux windows. What structure would be needed to a) Support pitched roof over bay structure, as leaning on the existing structure may not be possible and b) how could the floor structure of the upstairs bay window floor be supported to permit removal of structure beneath. I'm not willing to lose the upstairs bay or opt for a flat roof, this is the easy way out and that's cheating! :)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

steelwork would be better used and that would prevent the lose of any part of your structure

Hi Damo79, It's hard to picture the geometrical/structural challenge you are facing. However, initial thoughts would be: - If the roof structure is vaulted, I would suggest using single curvature bent steel beams which would also allow for Velux. - To support the above floor, a steel lintel (of type UC) could do the trick. I'd be happy to guide you more if you share some pictures/sketches of the situation. A picture is usually worth a thousand words! H.
