Changing door handles and screw broke off in the door.

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Changed my door handles down stairs with new ones from screw fix. Bought some more for upstairs, started to put them on and drilled 2 pilot holes putting handles on the screw head sheared off. I am know left with part of the screw in the door and I can't get it out. Need help, the handles only have 2 screws, one either end. I had no problem with the ones I put on down stairs. Please help I don't know what to do next. Thanks.

Unscrew the two good screws and remove the handle. Then use a monkey wrench or pair of pliers to grip the body of the screw without the head - unscrew and start again. Be careful not to over-tighten! Good luck.

Use pincers to remove screw, you may need to protect the door from the pincers. you will then have a ripped out hole. Either fill this with a wood wedge or hard filler, if this is no good, drill out a 4-5mm hole and use a joining screw which will hold the handles without the need of a fixing in the door. Some handles are supplied with these screws as an option and are very useful for heavy duty use. Go to a ironmongery specialist - not DIY stores for this. Good luck, Charlie

Take the handle back off, you should be able to get some pliers on the remaining bit of screw to unscrew it that way. Hope this helps
