Mounting speakers onto a metal studded partition wall?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM

Is it safe to mount some 6kg speakers (each) onto a metal studded partition wall in a new build without drilling through a metal stud? I would be using a pair of wall brackets designed for speakers which weigh another 1-2 kg each. Here is a link for the bracket: http://www.amazon.co.uk/B-Tech-BT77-Ultragrip-Clamping-Loudspeaker/dp/B004DCAOHK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392510733&sr=8-1&keywords=b-tech+bt77 Each bracket has three screw holes and I would use the metal type fixing for plasterboard. Like these: http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/nails-screws-fixings-hardware/fixings/wall_plugs___screws/-specificproducttype-interset_fixings/Rawlplug-Interset-41625-M4-x-40-9281504?skuId=9291204 Or these: http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/nails-screws-fixings-hardware/fixings/cavity_fixings/Rawlplug-Spring-Toggle-91947-Medium-9281509?skuId=9291209 Is this safe?

Absolutely. I generally use the interset rawlplug type fixings for stud walls & these are ideal for heavy speakers. Make sure you use the interset fixing tool though as people often try & use them without it & find they have problems: http://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-interset-fixing-setting-tool/92462?_requestid=207999 Always drill your hole deep enough to ensure there is enough space behind the plasterboard to take the full length of the interset plug. Good luck Andy Handytastic

Hi Pete, Due to vibration I would not mount speakers to plasterboard. I would fix a mounting board (18mm ply/mdf/osb) between the metal studding behind the plasterboard. Plaster board over and then fix the brackets to this board. Regards Simon

Hiya Best start here: http://www.fischer.co.uk/PortalData/10/Resources/support/sales-documents/documents/Plasterboard_Fixings_Guide_webversion.pdf https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjjleyPuvvRAhXGne0KHXunAbcYABAM&ohost=www.google.co.uk&cid=CAESIeD2rVI_7wSf8LF-6j_qrxVgvGF-0_jafcxjnUK6xxZlsQ&sig=AOD64_1biqs3EQEk4MRoxvapiFCzF3zkzQ&ctype=47&q=&ved=0ahUKEwiA2uWPuvvRAhVIC8AKHYhnCscQwg8ILw&adurl= Obliviously the load is divided by 3. Also consider the thickness and type of the plaster board, and the type of forces applied, or the combination of shear v's pull-out. Do consider vibration so they need to be done up well and the sound from the speakers will always sound better if fitted to a solid wall ! Regards John
