Although our system has been upgraded a few times recently (upgraded earth and new circuit board with RCD's and mini circuit breakers), I find that the lighting system has no earth wire present. Over the years whilst decorating the house I have fitted new light switches, mainly brass fronted with plastic backing, from reputable manufacturers, without any problems. However latest upgrade involves a small room at the back of the house which is moving to a silver theme, and I was about to fit a silver light switch (again, plastic backed with metal front) but find that instructions say it MUST be earthed.
I know regs have changed but will it be a problem if I continue with this??

If the lighting circuit is unearthed and you have Class 1 metal light switches and or Class 1 metal light fittings then it's dangerous! This is a Category 1 defect and you are strongly advised to remove all metal light switches and light fittings immediately and replace them with plastic ones for safety.
Unearthed lighting cables date the wiring to pre 1967, so its around 45 - 50 years old and as such is now at the end of its useful life. Completely rewiring the lighting circuits should seriously be considered in order to make the installation safe & compliant.
The seriousness of the lack of earthing should really have been pointed out to you by whoever fitted the RCD consumer unit as even with an RCD there is a risk of electric shock. Were you issued with both an Electrical Certificate and Part P building regulation certificates for the work carried out previously?

If your property is has been wired with conduit throughout and is still in good condition then the conduit will act as an earth, as long as the back box in the wall has a earth cable connecting to the switch this should in fact satisfy regulations.
The only problem you will have is not knowing if the conduit is in good condition and you will have to have this tested to confirm polarity and continuity.
If you do not have conduit then your lights will have no earth and may need rewiring
