Do I need to fill gaps in brickwork before I can paint the bitumen

Yes you must re-point then, when all areas are dry use a light p.v.a. sealer to seal over all areas of the wall 5 hours or so before you black jack it all. If you don't do this you will not only end up in a big mess you will use lots more black jack than you would need. Lose bits and big hole, will allow the black jack to flow out bit of crap damp crap will end up in the new black jack e.t.c. Brush down the wall and dry it out b4 anything don't paint on too much damp
