Old storage heater keeps blowing thermal fuses

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

Our good ole storage heater packed up after a power cut the other day, so I took the front panel off and after doing some research online, was able to ascertain that the blown part was a thermal fuse which I was able to see on the input/output switch assembly. It had melted so I replaced this with a piece of fuse wire which also melted 2 days later. I have replaced it for the 3rd time now and it popped straight away as the power cut in at midnight, this time it melted the copper wire which was left from the original thermal fuse which has always been in the heater and left sooty electrical charring in the surrounding area. I will not be doing this again for fear of fire, I have now isolated the heater from all electrical supply and I'm worried about replacing the thermal fuse as they are quite expensive, until I have found out what is wrong with it from a professional. Can anyone please help me as replacing it is out of the question. Thank you for reading this. Mark Lapham and family (Cold and getting colder).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think you'll find it's the stat or element that has caused the fuse to blow. Regards Lee Equipe Electrical

Replacing the thermal link with standard fuse wire will never work! 90% of the time the main reason for the thermal link operating is that the vents on the heater have been blocked by curtains, furniture or clothes placed too close to the heater.
