Earthy smell in kitchen cupboards
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.05 PM
I moved into a property 4 years ago, there was a water leak under kitchen floor. Had a plumber to fix problem, it was wet under floor so he dried it out for 4 days. Ever since this problem, I have a earthy smell coming up into all my lower cupboards, I have a fitted fridge and you can even smell it when you open it
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like mould is behind the units. If you remove the skirting under the units and, using a lamp or torch you should be able to see the mould on the walls behind the units.
The solution is to remove all the units, get rid of the mould using a 3-in-1 mould killer, paint the walls with an anti-mould paint and when dry re-fit the units. This is a couple of days work. It is possible that the mould is the result of condensation (cold external wall) and not from the previous leak. In that case it is better to insulate the walls using polystyrene panels (25mm thick).
Hope this helps.
