Electrical

lights and fan don't work in bathroom

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi I have bathroom fan and light that is operable from wall switch. At weekend there were people viewing house (it's for sale) and from then on i couldn't turn off fan at wall switch, and couldn't turn light on at wall switch, just inside bathroom. i have old wylex circuit breaker i think it's 20 + years old. today the fan made loud popping sound, there's bit of smoke and now the light wont work in bathroom, or just outside of it at all. i'm wondering if you can help please. ---UPDATE thanks very much i've looked and seems it did blow fuse as you suggested. will change with 5 amp white fuse wire - really appreciate your help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Perhaps the fan jammed and overloaded and the rewritable fuse has blown. Needs a new bit of fuse wire and you should be back on

Most likely the circuit board inside the fan that controls the timing after lights switch off has burnt out. As electrical works in that bathroom come under part P of the building regulations, you'll need to hire a Part P registered electrician to carry out some tests and probably fit a new fan for you. On completion of the works a Minor Electrical Works Certificate needs to be issued, that covers the repairs.
