Plastering & Rendering

Damp wall is drying out but strong mould smell.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM

The wall in one of the bedrooms became very damp due to a blocked pipe on the roof guttering which was not draining water away. It had been pooling on the 'v' of the roof and streaming down the brickwork at the front. The problem has been fixed so all water is draining away now and the walls should be drying out (which we are aware will take months) however after it was fixed, I removed the remaining wallpaper on that section of wall and found black mouldy gunk underneath, it smelt very strong! I scraped this away vigorously with a metal paper scraper, which seemed to remove it well. I then painted the section of wall with a strong bleach solution. I have been airing the room for days but despite this and the bleach wash the smell persists. Would painting the wall mask the smell? And if I do paint it, will that hinder the walls drying out process. Also, if it smells mouldy is it dangerous to be sleeping in that room. s.

A damp room is never good for sleeping in. Dehumidifier is what you need and paint walls with a sovereign chemical solution before finally painting room.

a matt paint would not affect the drying period but might not stop the mould coming back through, strip the wall back to the plaster and hire a dehumidifier to dry the wall quickly then re paint it this should work fine. :)
