Creaking loft on end of terrace new build
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM
I moved in to my 'new build' home 9 months ago. The house is probably a year old. When it is windy, and when I am in the upstairs bedrooms, I hear rather worrying creaking noises coming from the loft - it sounds like an old pirate ship and the noises actually wake me up when it's very windy. Is this normal? I am end of terrace so possibly first in line for the wind but I don't know if this is an issue. The black membrane inside the loft ripples when the wind blows - again, is this normal? Should I get the builder in or approach NHBC? Please help. Thanks

HI,
I would ask a local to builder to check the bracing on the roof. Im guessing that its a truss roof construction? Which should be braced diagonally to stop movement. If its loud enough to wake you i would have it checked. Building control should have inspected it during construction so it should be safe. A Local joiner/builder could add some bracing to stop the creaking noise.
Hope this helps
