Light switches mixed up after changing light fittings

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

I replaced 2 light fittings (bedroom 1 and bedroom 2). I managed to fit them and both are working fine, however, I later discovered a problem. The bathroom light no longer works, instead the switch is controlling the light in bedroom 2. The landing light also isn't working but the switch doesn't seem to be controlling anything. It is feasible that the circuit could run from bedroom 2 to the bathroom then to the landing. There are 3 other bedrooms upstairs which don't appear to have been affected. The house is about 37 years old. Each ceiling light fitting has 3 cables, each with a red, black and green/yellow wire. I guess I must have connected the wires incorrectly somewhere. Can anyone help me to fix it? Thanks Richard

The circuit is called a "Loop In" system and it runs from room to room. Unfortunately you have mixed some of the reds and blacks up and it will need diagnostic testing carried out to sort out which wire goes where. Should be an easy fix for a Part P registered electrician with decent test equipment.

Hi Richard, Yes absolutely, shouldn't take a sparky more than half our to sort out your mistake. For me or any electrician to wiring advice on this site would be extremely irresponsible. Put the job on here shouldn't cost you more than an hrs labour. ELCa Electrical LTD
