What approx dimensions of RSJ to span 6mts of non-load bearing wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM

I would like to know the approximate dimensions of an rsj span a 6mtrs opening of a non-load bearing wall. Brick piers on existing footings are to be built at each end 50cm plus.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear Ray_479, In order to install an RSJ the walls that are supporting the steel must be load bearing unless you intend to install, what is known in the trade as, a picture frame. If you are installing a folding door which seems very popular these days then the steel will most certainly need to be designed and manufactured. It will also need to have the correct amount of fire protection or be galvanized. As this does not sound like a new build I would suggest that a trial hole is dug under the proposed supporting wall to confirm if it is load bearing capacity of the existing footing will be adequate for the weight of the steel etc. If not then new foundations will be need to under the proposed new piers. This will need to be design and calculated. Factors to consider when installing new foundations: Invert level of nearby adopted drains. You may need a build over agreement with the water authority Any trees within 30m of any new foundations Soil conditions are to be factored into the foundation design Party wall agreement Hope this is of help. Kind regards Andrew

I think this must be a trick question, because if the wall is non load bearing, it does not require an RSJ or supporting pillars. If the wall is deemed to be non bearing or what is called a curtain or partition wall, that is it's only function, to divide an area for different uses
