Is cast iron bath too heavy for tiled floor?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM
Hi there we are hoping to fit a cast iron bath in our bathroom. We've had one plumber to look at it. But when he had a look a look under our current bath we discovered that the tiles are attached directly to the floor boards and that there is no mdf layer. He was worried that if we fit the cast iron bath that the weight of the bath along with the bath water would crack the tiles. I take on board that he doesn't want the tiles to be spoiled but I also get the impression he generally doesn't like fitting cast iron baths. Can anyone advise please. Thanks in advance

Hi, yes you can have a free standing bath on tiles, preparation is the key for a good substrate for the floor. Also the floor wants to be deflection free (no bounce), do not use mdf, I would go for 12mm tile backer board glue with floor tile adhesive and screwed to the floor boards or 15 mm wbp ply screwed then 6 mm tile backer board glue a screwed depending on what height is ok in the doorway. For fixing the tiles, use SPF powder adhesive and make sure the tiles are fixed with a solid bed.

If the tiles are of reasonable quality and stuck down well then you should be ok
You can drive a car over most tiles,
I suggest you slide it in with a few people on some cardboard or something
