I want to keep the peace with my neighbour (contributing to cost of neighbour's fence)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.05 PM

I am on quite good terms with my neighbour and in the recent high winds 12m of dividing fence has partially fallen down. It is ‘their’ wall and they have agreed to get it fixed. They have asked if I could contribute to the cost, which I am happy to do. However, they have decided to replace the old block wall with a new lap wooden fence (not panels) to match the existing 4ft fencing from the wall to the end of the garden. They have passed me the quote for removal and replacement, which at a total of nearly £2000 seems quite high. The wooden fence comes to about £1200, (so £100 per Meter) removal of old wall £800. If it was my responsibility I would repair/replace it myself with a concrete block and screen wall (as per the original). Do you think the figures are realistic and if so would a contribution of £400 (a third of the fence cost) seem neighbourly, mean or over generous?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, if it's their wall, it's up to them what they rebuild or replace it with. They have no right to ask you to contribute to the cost of rebuild, from what you are saying the length of the wall is about 12mt. If it was 1.2 mt high x .225 wide that would be approximately 7 tons of rubble to go away, Skip would cost £160-00p, 2 men for a day say on the high side £400-00p, total £560-00p. We put up 4' close board fencing for £43 per mt, total £516-00p, looks like your paying for all the work if you go halves, job price tops would be £1200-00p Not that neighbourly, tell them you can't afford to contribute, I think they are praying on your good nature Peter

I totally agree with the comments and with what Rowan Groundworks have said it's there boundary and you should not have to pay towards the works and looks over priced.

I also agree with the above comments....Each neighbour should own one side....If it's theirs, then it's up to them!
