Safe tips for covering air vents in bedrooms

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.05 PM

Hi, I live on a fifth floor ex-council flat with three other girls. The flat is the solid concrete type and has quite large external air vents in most of the rooms. These are quite high on the walls and are plastic screens on the inside. As you can imagine these make the flat very cold in the winter, last year was terrible. Is there a way to cover these up for the next few months to keep the warmth in, or is that unsafe? The flat has double glazing, and the gas boiler is in the kitchen. We don't plan on covering the living room or kitchen vents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sorry to be a bit vague but it all depends on what boiler is currently installed and if you have any other gas appliances in the flat as to how much, if any, ventilation you require. For example, most modern combination boilers do not require ventilation unless in a compartment but add another gas appliance for example a gas fire and you would need ventilation of a specific size. Ventilation is needed for certain appliances as it plays a major part in the appliance working safely and not posing a risk to health and possibly life. So if you don't know what the ventilation is for it is extremely inadvisable to cover any ventilation and get a gas safe engineer to have a look at your appliances and calculate your property's ventilation needs. I hope this helps, feel free to contact me if you would like any more information. Regards Chris.
