Restoration & Refurbishment

Creating a fire barrier between kitchen and child's bedroom above

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.01 PM

Hi, this is my first time posting here so bear with me... We recently moved into a 3 bed semi detached Victoria Home c. 1890. We are slowly refurbishing one room at a time and are currently working on what will be my son's bedroom (he is only 6 weeks old so I have a bit of time!). This room is located at the rear of the house at the end of a long corridor and underneath is the kitchen. Of course this means a potential fire risk and also access/escape in an emergency. The house has been pretty unloved and from what I can see the kitchen down lights do not have the fire protect cases around them. The plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen looks relatively new but I have no idea if it is fireproof. I would like to know what we could do to ensure we effectively protect his room. Should we lay something under the floor in his room once we have had the downright replaced with fireproof ones? Should we add a fireproof plasterboard to the kitchen ceiling, although I'm not sure if it will take the additional weight. Should the plasterboard be sealed at the edges so it contains the fire? Who is the best person to ask to do the work, a builder or a plasterer? thanks for your help, better safe than sorry... fiona

You could take down the existing ceiling and put fire resistant insulation between the joists then put up fire line plasterboard and re~skim the ceiling. Depending on where you are I'm more than happy to quote you on this. D.GREEN.Plastering
