What would cause cracks to appear on every ceiling in my house?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.05 PM

I have lived in my bungalow for 7 yrs now and over the last 12 months or so I have started to notice hairline cracks running the length of my ceilings, they appear to be where the joins are in the plasterboards. I'm a little concerned as to why they have appeared so suddenly, I also have a length of coving on one of my bedroom ceilings that is coming away from the wall and has left a 5mm gap. I dont know whether this has any bearing at all but, I had loft insulation done last year, also a new boiler, and cavity wall insulation so I had tradesmen working in the roofspace/loft on several occasions, someone also said that the heat and humidity from last summer could have had something to do with these cracks too? Also, in my bedroom, I keep hearing a 'clunking' noise coming from the outer wall behind my bed, it sounds like a rubber mallet hitting the brickwork and it pretty loud! As I said, I have lived here for seven years and I have not noticed this noise before, however, I have been really ill over the last year and have spent a lot more time in my bedroom than I would normally do, I am worried that the ceiling cracks coupled with the coving gap and the clunking noise are warnings that the house is going to fall on me, I really need some advice please. Thank you.

Sounds like your new insulation and heating is casing thermal cracking. In my opinion it's not worth fixing until next year as any repair now will crack again. New builds are left to season for 2 years to let all movement and cracking nail pops to take place before any repair. Keep an eye and if you're worried about anything call a local structural engineer.
