Draft from ground floor (suspended floor covered in carpet)

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Having recently moved into a new property and having the downstairs carpeted, I have noticed that the floor remains quite cold even when the room is warmed up. Sitting on the floor you notice drafts which I am assuming is coming from the floor and gaps in the chipboard. I don't really want to go through the whole process of ripping up the floor and laying insulation underneath so just wondered what the best option would be to reduce / stop the draft. Could I get away with just caulking the edges and sealing any gaps in the joints with tape? Could I staple down some foil based underlay and put the existing underlay and carpet back over the top, or would this create issues?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you want a high impact cost effective way then go and get a thin rubber based foil coated laminate underlay. They are around 3mm thick and what you can do is staple it down so it does not move with a hand stapler. Before you do that fill around the base of the skirting with silicone, filler etc. Then lay the carpet underlay down on top nice and flat and staple that in place. Then lay the carpet back down. Be careful not to buy standard laminate underlay as its way too springy, generally a hard rubber based foil coated type will work without altering the feel of the carpet. Some call it high performance and I know this answer may not sound orthodox but it does work to an extent but nothing is better than proper under insulation but that is a difficult and expensive option. You may need a bolster to put the carpet back down and ideally a stretcher tool.
