Uneven sub floorboard under existing carpet. Is it possible to reuse existing carpet after leveling?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hi my floorboard is quite uneven and you can easily notice it with existing carpet laid on top. I would love to keep the existing carpet it's only 1 year old and would love to level the floorboard underneath. is it generally possible to re-carpet with existing carpet after leveling what's underneath? I'm also not sure if it's mainly flooring (carpenter?) job or mainly carpet fitter's job...

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, yes it is possible to keep the carpet as you are only planing to level the floor and not move any walls, however a lot of carpet fitters will try and convince you into changing it, as it works better for them. As far as leveling the floor, that's a carpenter's job. Find yourself a good handyman who can do both jobs for you, you save yourself money by dealing with one tradesman.

You will be able to refit the carpet depending if the dimensions of the room haven't changed, I.e walls and skirting. You can use hardboard to level small amounts of unevenness. If the floors are really bad it's advised to have it ply boarded. save time and money by doing it yourself. You can cut hardboard with a concave Stanley blade! Use 20mm or under ringed shank nails (so you don't hit pipes). pin the boards using a grid pattern of 4 inches apart. Make sure there's no bounce spots in the hardboard. A carpet fitter would also be able to do this but will charge. Hope this helps!

HI jae, if your floorboards are noticeable through your existing carpet then they must be in quite poor condition. No you cannot hardboard or put 6mm ply over the top of a poor floor expecting it to rectify the problem. The floorboards should be fixed, level and well supported underneath, with no gaps bigger than 5-10mm max. If the floor is fixed it wont require covering. You may have to get some new boards to repair broken or missing pieces but this should be a straight forward job for a proper carpenter. Unfortunately i have seen this too many times, trades people covering bad floors with hardboard or ply, it does not last and costs more in the long run. And yes once your floor has been repaired properly new gripper should be fitted along with the original underlay (if suitable). Then your original carpet can be reinstalled as good as new. Hope this helps.

Yes you can keep the same carpet as long as you do not damage it when pulling it up. You will be possibly told you need a new carpet but you do not this can be re used if carefully when taking it out.

Yes, we would lift the carpet underlay and gripper and use flooring grade ply board to even the floor out, once the ply board is secured we wouldn't continue to replace the gripper rods (new of course) and re fit the underlay (or advise on the condition of the underlay) and re fit the carpet as it should more or less fall back in to place. Hope we've helped. Artisan flooring services Ltd

Yes it’s possible to use old carpet that you pulled up to level your floor you only need to replace gripper that you have lifted to get to the uneven area and underlay if desired most carpet fitters can carry out this work

Really simple answer, your carpet can 100% be re used. All that needs to happen is the carpet needs up-lifting along with your underlay. Then the floor board needs re levelling and securing (any trades man should be able to do this, including the carpet fitter) then your carpet can go back down. Straight forward job. Shouldn’t take longer than a few hours.

Yup That’s not an issue if you thinks that your carpet is in good condition then just remove carpet carefully and level your floor and after levelling with help of carpet fitter fit it again
