Skimming over lathe and plaster in grade 2 listed building
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.01 PM
Hi. I've just bought an early Victorian house, grade 2 listed, with most of the walls of lathe and plaster. Is it ok to skim over? And if not, what other options are there for making them smooth? Additional Because they will be as rough as a badger's backside after I take off the wood chip wall paper.

Lime walls should only ever be repaired with lime. Lime has a breathable ability and will react with modern plasters causing cracking and bonding problems. Best thing to do is take back the surface and replaster, then when dry 5-8 days then apply the lime top coat. Never ever use modern plaster with lime, anybody who understands lime work will tell you.

Hi there, skimming over lathe and plaster is not recommended but if you are to replaster over lathe and plaster ensure that you pva the walls to ensure a good bond, and any loose plaster remove and patch in with bonding or hardwall. Hope this information is help full. Kind regards Steve
