Should I use structural engineers in case of legal issues?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.01 PM

Just wondering if someone could help. I was recently asked to fit a new window (including cutting out the opening) in a customer's house. Although I know how to do this, it is more of a legal question. I have always had a structural engineer involved regardless of how big or in this case how small. However after a colleague stopped laughing at the suggestion that I used a structural engineer for this small job, I argued that without it, in the event that something went wrong either during and after the work (even if it is not directly related), then the customer's insurance and my insurance would not accept responsibility. Although I haven't had any issues, I would like to settle this point, if nothing else but to make my mate eat his words. Although I am obviously prepared to be wrong. Any advice appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hello....I wouldn't get a structural engineer for a small window....as long as the method of work is carried out correctly and the lintel is the correct one with the right amount of bearing, you won't have any problems, but inform the council (building regs) of what you are doing, if they have any issues they will let you know about them.

Would your colleague laugh if I said that you would need to involve building control?
