Replacing laminate tiles with ceramic tiles for bathroom floor
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.04 PM
I want to replace existing laminate tiles in my bathroom with ceramic tiles. I understand that these tiles need to be laid on a plywood sub base, which means taking up the old chipboard sub floor. Does this mean that all bathroom fixtures will have to be removed also? ie. bath toilet, shower cubicle, wash basin etc. Sounds like it could be an expensive job. Regards Richard

Hi Richard
No you don't need to lay ply. You can use Durabase matting. Take up the laminate then lay the matting.
Go to youtube and watch the video.
This is a really good product.
It's not too big a job. You will need to remove the toilet and basin but not the bath.
Good luck.
Martin.

Unless the bath is free standing you wouldn't have to move it, in my experience it always looks better if you take toilet and sink out then put back in after tiling floor. You can cut round sanity ware but it takes time and never looks as nice. It's not a huge job to take out toilet and sink and put back in

This is a contentious question obviously, IMHO the chipboard floor does not need removing, the recommended minimum for substrate under a floor tile is 25mm. Which with 18mm modern chipboard I would go for 9mm exterior ply. Pan and basin out. Bath panel now too big for the gap ? If it is cut the bottom and attach the base to a batten and flex in the top. Good luck , Steve P.S. don't forget to PVA the ply and allow to dry. Plus use a good quality flexible drymix adhesive and grout and it should last for years : )
