Diverter valve attached to water tank - can I have separate controls for hot water and central heating?

I recently bought a house containing a open vented heating system. The timer/controller for the system only has 2 options, hot water or central heating and hot water. However, looking at the water tank I can see that a diverter valve is attached to the tank. Would this then enable separate controls of the hw and ch individually were I to install a new controller? It seems a waste to heat the full tank of water when it is not being used, not to mention that it can be quite noisy especially in the morning.

It sounds like you have a three port valve fitted. Look for Y Plan system. Alternatively, you may opt for an S Plan system which incorporates two x two port valves.Using this S Plan will also need additional wiring and control center to operate the two systems which will also need additional safety features.
