Neighbour has drilled into our loft - is this legal?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.01 PM
Hello, Our neighbor in the flat above ours has lifted his floor boards and drilled into the joists to run electric cables, these support his floor, but are in our loft space. Is this legal? thanks

Yes its perfectly legal and its the standard way to run cables in a floor void. There is probably a clause or mention about shared boundaries documented somewhere in your property deeds?
Whilst he has his floorboards up it may pay you to ask him if you can have your lighting circuit rewired as your lighting cables run in the same ceiling/floor void. This could well save you time and money to get it done now.

Hi, As this is classified as floor void and not as loft space, this is a perfectly legal procedure, however if any damage to your ceiling occurs he wil be liable.
Hope this helps. Stuart Raven Electrical
