applying adhesive to porcelain tiles over underfloor heating
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM
I've had a tiler (not from this site) quote me for a job in my kitchen. The job is to lay UFH mat and 60x60 tiles on concrete based floor. The floor is level but the method the tiler mentioned to blob the adhesive on rather than spread. My concern is by using a blob of adhesive there will be a bigger space between the mat and tiles which will impact heatup times. Am I right to be concerned?

There should never be blobs of adhesive or dabs as this weakens the installation. He should have brought the floor up to the appropriate level, then layed heating and screeded over it. There should then be no need for blobs.

Yes you should be concerned. Tiles are never laid on blobs of adhesive and definetly NEVER on a floor.

He is most likey meaning dot & dab which is not the correct way this will leave voids under the tiles which in turn will crack, what should happen is the floor should have a self levelling coat over the UFH then the adhesive should be troweled onto the floor using a suitable notched trowel either 10 or 12 mm trowel and the tiles should be back butter for a solid bed fixing ,all I can say is that he is no way a tiler
