Glow worm Flexicom SX boiler making occasional loud noise

My boiler is a 3 year old Glow-Worm Flexicom SX, which has been regularly serviced since new. Over the last few months it has started making a worrying loud noise occasionally (sometimes as much as every hour though) which is like a loud bang/puff. It's as if gas might be trapped and then suddenly let go - causing the noise. I can smell gas when this happens too. Does anyone have any idea what this might be and whether I should be worried? I have had an engineer look at it but the noise didn't happen when he was there and he said he couldn't see what the problem was. Any ideas/help gratefully received!
