Loose basin tap that defies all tightening attempts!

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.01 PM

Despite trying every tool and every method, including buying new taps and flexi pipe, the hot tap on our basin is loose and swivels. We wonder if the heat causes the rubber washer to relax over time? Is there any other kind of washer that we can try? Cork washers used to be fitted along with the rubber ones if we remember correctly. Would fitting these help, and are they still available? We are getting desperate that we cannot find a solution as our 87 year old mother has come to live with us, she has a grip like a wrench (?!) and this is really worsening the problem! HELP! Additional Thankyou very much, Graham of ALVER VIEW PROPERTY SERVICES, for your prompt reply to our dilemma and you even provided a part number! Screw fix catalogue at hand.....here's hoping!!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Try using a plastic top hat washer between the underside of basin and the nut. They are available from Screwfix - cat no. 88438. Graham Alver View Property Services

If the plastic nut under the tap has split, no amount of tightening will help. This is a common problem caused by over-tightening. Solution: Replace nut with a brass nut freely available from most Plumbers Merchants. Tighten with a swivel universal spanner.
