Does removing chimney breast affect ability for neighbours in flat below to use their fireplaces?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.04 PM
Hello, I am looking at renovating my flat and potentially taking out one chimney breast in the master bedroom to create more space (it is 180cm wide and protrudes 30cm). I live in a 3 story victorian terraced conversion and am on the top floor (only loft space above me). Does removing my chimney breast affect the ability for my neighbors below to use their fireplaces if they are in use? Or do the fireplaces directly below the one I would like to remove have different flues to the roof? Thanks!

You would have to check the flues and where they meet up, you can have all the fireplaces having their our own flues. If you have three fireplaces and three chimney pots then it is very likely they are separate but a smoke test and a visual test should be done first before you start to remove any chimney breast. Also you could damage the other flues if brick build and they only have one brick separating the flue linings between them. Hope this helps.

The flues for the fireplaces in the rooms directly below your room will run up through your fire breast. Your fire place will have its flue running up the centre of the breast and the two fireplaces below will run one flue to the right side and one flue to the left side. So if you remove your fire breast then your neighbours will not be able to use their fire places.
