Will Artex protect a ceiling better than plaster in a slightly damp room?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.04 PM

In seeking a quote to redecorate my 1950s one bed flat, the decorator/ painter suggested putting Artex on the bathroom and kitchen ceiling by way of protecting it from mild damp generated in both of these rooms and also due to various bumps and imperfections on the ceiling in both rooms. There is a minor mould problem in both rooms due to circumstantial use, so he suggested that Artex would work better than plaster in the long term. I am not a huge Artex fan, but if it serves a purpose, I would consider it. Any thoughts on this? Is Artex a better binder/ protector than plaster for a slightly dodgy ceiling?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No it would not. Artex is a water based product so would be no different to coating with emulsion paint. Rub down and fill required areas and apply two coats of oil based eggshell. If the ceiling is in poor condition you may have to skim the areas with plaster. I would look at the ventilation to both rooms.
