Moving existing boiler to new wall - allowed or not?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.00 PM

We are extending our house and the wall where our Potterton Suprima 60L boiler (non condensing) will have to come down and our boiler moved to a new wall. We are receiving contradicting information from builders we have approached to quote on the project: one builder says that, provided the boiler is big enough to cope with the needs of the extended house, nothing stops us from doing so. Another builder told us we were not allowed to re-site our boiler because it was non-condensing and that it needed to be considered as a new installation and our existing boiler replaced with a new condensing boiler. Who is right and is there any "legal" requirement from any "Gas safe" body to impose us to change a perfectly good non-condensing boiler for a new condensing one? Our boiler has given us very good service for 8 years and probably still has quite a few years life in it assuming it is big enough. We are obviously quite keen not to spend money on something unless it is really necessary.... Many thanks to any tradesman who would be willing to give us some advise! Mrs Rose

The only type of boiler that cannot be re-located is an 'Open Flue Boiler', yours is a room sealed with fan assisted flue. Despite it being non-condensing this is not an issue, however current regulations state that we as gas installers cannot fit a NEW non-condensing boiler, it has to be condensing and SEBUK 'A' rated efficiency. The advice you have received from the builders was given in good faith, but please don't ask builders who are obviously not Gas Safe to advise on such matters, seek out competent and professional advice in future from Gas Safe registered engineers as you have already started to do so! After all, if we are feeling unwell we don't seek advice or help from our dentist.
