wood floor not fixed to anything and gaps appearing

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hello, I recently had a solid wood floor installed with new skirting boards added, however soon after large gaps started to appear between the flooring as the new floor slipped into the gaps at the edges under the skirting. The 'trademan' who installed it came back and tightened everything up (in the process trashing the new skirting boards), but the gaps are now appearing again - I've realised that he should have glued or nailed the wood floors down, but at the time assumed he knew what he was doing. Do I need to get someone in who will need to redo it all or is there another fix for a floor that's already laid. thank you! Edit on 20th Jan - I've now had the floor lifted, re-layed and nailed down. Very stressful, but at least it's done now.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It is possible that the affected area could be lifted and relayed? If you're experiencing gaps in more than one area, then unfortunately I would advise lifting the whole floor and fixing it directly to the sub floor. In any case, I would never float a solid floor under any circumstance, engineered floors are designed to be floated, nailed or glued depending on the thickness. Solid wood floors can be very unstable and for this reason they should only be nailed or glued directly to your sub floor after they have acclimatised in your property for several weeks prior to fitting.
