GU10s for fireplace
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.48 PM
I have 2x gu10 halogens in a fireplace recess. I'd like to change to energy efficient bulbs but only the halogens (i've tried LED) seem to be able to cope with the heat. Are there any other options for heat tolerant low energy gu10s? Additional Hmm sounds like I might need to do that - does it make a difference for compliance that it's not an open fire but a wood burner with hetas chimney pipe and that lights are within the surround of the chimney wall (ie some feet from the fire+pipe)?

The placement of GU10 light fittings in a working fireplace is not compliant with BS7671:2008 wiring regulations as the heat has a detrimental influence of both the light fittings and the cables. To make the installation safe and compliant, it would be best to remove the fittings completely.

As halogens run at about 250 deg C the lamps are designed to withstand this heat, you infer that LED's are failing due to excessive heat, so we can assume that the heat exposure of the fitting and surrounding area is is between ambient and 250 deg.
I would be more worried about the wiring being adequately protected than trying to find a low energy bulb.
