Are ridge tiles loose because of poor workmanship?

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

I had a new roof done six years ago. During the strong winds on the 22nd December 2013, the ridge tiles came off and broke tiles on my roof. They also damaged my car. Over the holiday period, my husband checked the ridge tiles at the back of our house and they are loose as well. Is this down to poor workmanship? As you don't except this from a roof of it age. I am also taking account I don't seem to see any roof damage apart from our house. Would really appreciate some advice on this.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Michelle To be fair, the winds are blowing trees down and some roofs have been blown clean off. I think you've done well with a few loose ridge tiles, you would really struggle to prove poor workmanship after 6 years, maybe give your insurance company a call.

It may have been down to a poor mix or the mortar bed was too sparse when bedding the ridges. However, proving this would be difficult without analyzing the mix which is probably not worth doing since you are unlikely to get anywhere with negligence/ poor workmanship. I would go with the advice above, but your insurers are only likely to pay for the tiles lifted or damaged during a single event, what they do not generally do is pay to re-bed all the ridges. That said, they are very very busy at the moment so my advice would be to get a quote from a local roofer ASAP and send this in to your insurer. You may get lucky and they may just settle the claim without sending out a Loss Adjuster. Post the job...
