fitting bathroom extractor fan with an over run - would existing wiring need to be changed?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.04 PM
I currently have a bathroom extractor which comes on when we turn the bathroom light on and goes off as soon as the light is turned off. I would like to fit one with an over run and some sort of shutter that closes as the fan goes off but am not sure would the existing wiring need to be changed or would one with an over run work?

A 3 core and earth cable is required in order for a timer fan to be installed. You need a permanent live ( this runs the fan for the desired length after switching off the light ) a neutral and a switched live from the light in order for it to come on with the light. If you take the front cover off the fan you may see a 2 core and earth ( red & black, or brown & blue ) or you may see a 3 core if it has one ( red, yellow & blue or brown, black & grey ).
I hope this helps you!

Yes its likely that the link between the light and the fan will need to be rewired. In addition a triple pole fan isolator needs to be installed outside the bathroom and the circuit RCD protected to make it compliant with BS7671:2008.
