Gas hob - how is the supply switched off?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.00 PM
Does a kitchen fitter need to tamper with a gas hob's connection to gas supply when installing a kitchen worktop? I am asking as was left with a dangerous gas leak after I had a new worktop installed and the Transco chap believed gas pipes, beneath worktop, were tampered with or knocked about. I am not sure what happened and just want to understand what could have happened here as it was scary! Also how would you switch off a gas hob - is there a switch underneath the worktop to do this ie if it is run on electricity as my boiler is?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes the hob would need to be removed in order to change the worktop. There is normally a gas cock on the pipework supplying the hob, there will also be a separate electrical connection powering the spark to the hob. I've heard of many fitters removing the hob themselves and refitting it afterwards as there are compression joins that they can undo and then reconnect, it's a big NO NO though, glad it's all fixed now.
The gas cock , which is fitted to the supply pipe to the hob , will isolate the gas hob , but its for the pro`s and shouldn't be touched by anyone other than a registered gas fitter
