Paying for builder's parking permits

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.00 PM

I am doing a loft conversion and a kitchen extension and I've just agreed the price yesterday. This morning my builder is telling me that I have to pay for all the parking permits, shouldn't it be included on his price? What is the norm in London? Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear Homeowner I don't think is your responsibility to pay for the parking permits. Given the fact the tradespeople are self-employed, they need to be aware of the parking charges even before they agree the price, either including in the estimate or if the client agrees, then visitor parking permits could be available from the local council at request by the homeowner. Once you agree a price, you can't come up with requests the following day to have your parking charges paid, unless you do extra work not covered by the agreed price and then extra charges occurs. I have been self-employed a long time, and never asked my clients to pay my parking charges because I know is my problem, my responsibility.

We normally include and specify an amount for parking within our price. In London parking can add up- £15- 40/ day/ vehicle. Some tradesmen need to bring their own transport as it has their own tools within and they don't like to leave on site. But if they are just using their own transport in preference to public transport then we don't normally pay. It is possible to get residents visitor permits from your council which are considerably cheaper (than meters). Some councils offer tradesmen permits but these tend to be more expensive than residents. Most councils have an app for their parking so you could always pay for parking like that - but it costs the normal rate. What should be more alarming is that the builder has asked for more money on day one! One should hope that it is not indicative of things to come!

Builders in London know the problem of working here so should add this to price of job but inform client of this
