Tiling over a heated floor (water pipes in concrete)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

I was wondering what kind of floor tile adhesive I need to use over a heated floor? I think I have to get a flexible one, but does it matter if it is quick set or not? Also I've read that you need an uncoupling membrane to compensate for the heating and cooling of the floor and subsequent contraction and expansion. Do I need this or will a flexible adhesive work? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks Additional Thank you Phil, I haven't been on here before so was unsure where I could reply. Your tiling job pictures are excellent, I only wish I could get you to tile my floor but I live in Canada. I used to live in Burnley, Lancashire but moved here 8 years ago and haven't seen a decent tiling job yet, so I'm doing it myself. Thanks again Phil I can make a start now. Alison.

You are fine to tile over underfloor heating as long as you're using flexible adhesive. It doesn't matter if it's rapid or not, but "if you're doing it yourself" and you want some time in the bucket before it sets, then use either Keraflex maxi, or the cheaper one I use at times which is Ultra Proflex sp extended set, as it super flexible and nice to use. If you want rapid, but don't want to pay £20+ then look up Bostik Vitri-flex, as it's a S1 adhesive "full of flexibility" and you can pick it up for less than £12.50 per 20kgs. Look on the bags for c2ft, or c2ft s1, and cg2 for grout. I would though recommend either Ditra or Dural Durabase uncoupling membrane, it's better to pay the £8-9 per meter and do it once, than risk cracked tiles and grout. Phil
