Central Heating

Heaters fail to heat up at night

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.47 PM

Hi anyone who can help. I've been having heating problems since day one in my private rental. I'm an electrician with very little knowledge of heating systems. I'll run through what I know. I have a gas boiler in the loft (Ideal Mexico), radiators with trv's fitted. A water tank downstairs with a two port motorised valve and pump fitted by it. It's all controlled by a controller in the kitchen. The issue I have is the timer can be set up to come on at intervals and works fine. Only thing is for the heating to come on the hot water also has to be on. The boiler won't fire up without water being set to on. The heaters come on and fire up to full temp during the day but fail to heat up at night when it's coldest. My guess is the boiler stops heating them once the tank is up to its optimal temp. The landlord has sent a plumber up who got the heaters up and running (during the day) and reported no fault. Any info or ideas would be appreciated as we have a newborn and 10 year old and we live in Scotland! Thanks. Robert.

Have a look at the cylinder stat on the cylinder. There will be a wire to terminal-common and one to terminal-1(live and live return or water on) There should also be a wire to terminal-2(water off). If your system gives priority to hot water which it probably does then it needs the water off wired up to turn on the c/heating once water is up to temperature. Check wiring diagrams on line for your type of system to confirm but off the top of my head I think this will connect to terminal 7 in the wiring center. Kevin.

Sounds like the solenoid controlled hot water diverter has broken. A common problem. It should divert the hot water from the boiler to either circulate around the inside of the cylinder or go direct to the radiators or both! If on hot water only the heating comes on then the valve is not operating as it should. If this was the only problem then heating only should have the same outcome, which is heating and hot water. If nothing happens at all then something is preventing the boiler firing up. Is the room thermostat sufficiently high enough?? A simple issue that can be overlooked. If the boiler still isn't firing then you need a new programmer and possibly a new diverter valve as well. Good Luck!
