Plastering & Rendering

When to skim over recently rendered rooms and hall way?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi, We have had a DPC in our old victorian house. We then hacked off a lot of the old plaster in the 2 rooms and hall way and recently had it rendered. It's been just over a week since we had it rendered and we have not had it skimmed over yet. My question is when should we skim over the internal rendered walls, and do we need to pva it before? Lastly do we need to use special type of plaster to skim over so its hard wearing? Thank you

This sort of thing used to be skimmed with Sirapite which did a good job but is no longer available. These days it tends to be finished with Thistle Multi Finish. Cement renders can sometimes shrink a little and crack when drying out - this shouldn't be a problem after a week or so assuming it's dried out. Providing there is sufficient key for the skim coat PVA shouldn't be necessary but if the render has high suction it will help to seal it and give a longer working time on the skim coat - cement renders applied following an injected DPC tend to have water proofer added so it shouldn't be a problem. SBR is better than PVA in my opinion.
