Plastering & Rendering

uneven joists have meant the new plastered ceiling is lumpy, any advice on how ways to rectify this?

Hello, we are redecorating our L-shaped open planned kitchen/dining/living room. Our ceiling was originally artexed, the plasterer and his team took down the plasterboard (partly to give the electrician access to the electrics). Once electrics were done, new plasterboard were put up directly onto joists and skimmed. However the finish was not level, with the ceiling having one very noticeable ridge where one particular joist is lower than the others and a crack appeared across the middle of the room. The plasterer returned, added another layer of bonding and re-skimmed with a "thicker" layer of plaster in areas needed. There is now not much of an obvious point, but the ceiling is even more uneven and at some points when lined up is out about 4cm. I am very unhappy about this, and originally requesting that this is remedied using a batten and plasterboard method however they have said we will lose about 40 cm ceiling height and so this is the best they can do. I would appreciate your advice - are there any other options we can consider for a smooth straight finish?

Hi there You can add more bonding to level out the ceiling then re skim if possible or otherwise you have to batten using wedges to level the joists then reboard and skim Regards Joseph

Hi Remove the lot and start again. Make sure your joists are level and use wedges to level the underside of the rafters prior to boarding. If you keep getting it bonded and skimmed, it may come down on its own due to the weight. If this procedure is adhered to prior to boarding, you should only need a 5mm skim on a ceiling. Who ever told you you would loose 40 cm ceiling height, dont listen to them either. Thank you Cpsrefurb
