Electrical

Wylex Cartridge Fuse - BS5486 Part 13

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.47 PM

I had a spark when plugging in my tablet. The lights are on everywhere and i have electricity in the kitchen and bathroom but nowhere else. I had a look at the wylex box and it had tripped, tried resetting but didn't resolve problem. I changed the fuse wire (using correct 15amp as stated on box) but alas still no power. Any ideas? Thank You Pamela

Pamela, it sounds like the fuses you have are BS3036 rewireable type fuses, although they do not have this marked on them. Cartridge fuses are BS1361 and are cylindrical in shape so clearly you don't have these as they can not be replaced with fuse wire. Unfortunately BS5486 is nothing to do with fuses and it's more to do with type testing of the metal enclosure that the fuses plug into, although this has now been superseded by BS EN 60439-3-1991. Why the fuse went though is difficult and can probably only be diagnosed by doing some testing on site. Due to the age of the fusebox, you may wish to consider getting a full Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out on the wiring to check that its all in good condition and safe.

At this point you need to call an electrician to locate the problem. Sorry. Kevin
