Chimney breast removal - half wooden support on roof chimney

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi guys I've small question regarding chimney breast removal from my house. My builder has removed all 4 ( 2 from bedrooms, 2 from lounge) chimney's from my house. He also removed half chimney from the roof, the roof chimney is like U shape so he removed half from one side & half remain on one side. Now where the half has removed he puts wooden support & it's solid support. I've also applied for building regulations permit to do this but my question is Will it be ok to have half wooden support on roof chimney or does he have to do brick works to look same on the other side of chimney breast? Please guys any little advice will do as I'm doing this first time in my house. Thanks

Chimney breast supports normally consist of steel gallows brackets or steel beams. Also chimneys in some cases act as buttresses to walls to stabilise them. You should really have agreed the work with the Building Control Surveyor/Building Inspector beforehand. I would advise you arrange an appointment with the Surveyor as soon as possible. Going back to the chimney support, Local Authority Building Control have published guidance notes on standard gallows bracket details. You can ask your Surveyor to bring one along on his inspection or download from the web.
