bad workmanship - workmen sacked but will drop in bill for their wages

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

My friend has had workmen in for 8 days now she has asked them for a contract and an itemized list of what they are buying, She has paid them £2500. They put in an rsj after removing the support wall, due to this, her floor has dropped all her ceilings have cracked and there are other problems. When she approached them and said to them about it, they told her that it was not their fault, the wall was already like that and the floor had dropped before they had done the work. It ended up that they were sacked because they spent the full day after the inspector told them it had to be lifted. They are now saying that tomorrow they are going to drop in receipts and a bill for their wages. It is now costing her to pay to have the work put right. Does she have to pay them or what can she say? One of the builders was really horrible, the way he spoke and would not accept any of the problems were their fault.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If damage was caused by them doing their works without putting in the correct supports, then it should really be going through there insurance. They should have had the floor supported with acros for the short time until the rsj was installed and the rest of the wall was taken down. You're well within your right to ask for their insurance details, if not then I would consider contacting a small claims court. Hope this helps Regards Kevin Ruby Acres
