What connection is needed for dishwasher - plug (with extension) or fused socket?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

I have a small dishwasher with a 13 amp plug attached. There is an ordinary socket on the adjacent wall to where the dishwasher would be (above counter height). Some friends say I should just plug the dishwasher in to that - maybe with an extension another says I need to go through a fused socket. Please can someone tell me what I need. Am quite confused.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, You need to be able to isolate before you move it (for maintenance etc.). You can do this by plugging it in the socket as you have already suggested. If you want to have an aesthetic worktop i.e. you do not want to see the cable, you can install a socket in an accessible position so that you can still isolate prior to removal, sometimes an adjacent cupboard will suffice. You only need a fused spur when you are placing a socket out of reach, this has two functions, safe isolation for maintenance and to fuse down for a single cable (spur) to the socket. All works in a kitchen by law are reportable to local building control (a Part P registered business can do this on your behalf).

Requirements for Part P have changed - All works within a kitchen are not required.
