I'm painting my stair treads and wanted a walnut colour varnish, Ronseal do a diamond hard floor varnish in walnut. Can I use this over a white primer as the treads have already been primed and I don't want to strip it back again.

No! you will have to strip back

You may be able to get round stripping by using a opaque paint system.
